Pretty Little Liars

Jessica Corcoran digs six feet to get to TV’s deepest secrets.

Pretty Little Liars. “Never trust a pretty girl with an ugly secret,” this is definitely the case in the new enigmatic ABC drama set in a perfect little town called Rosewood.  A town so unobtrusive and pristine, you’d never guess it holds so many secrets. Some of the ugliest ones belong to the prettiest girls in town – Aria, Spencer, Hanna and Emily, four estranged friends for  whose darkest secrets are about to unravel .

Their friend had been missing  for over a year and they had all promised that they wouldn’t  tell anyone what really happened the mysterious night Allison went missing, after this they  all believed there secrets would be forever safe, this was until they all left her funeral and started receiving mysterious text messages from someone named A. The messages the girls have been getting from “A,” saying – and threatening – things only Alison would know. But it couldn’t be Alison. Could it? Whoever it is, they seem to know all the girls’ secrets, and seem to be watching their every move.

The girls are friends again, but will they be there for each other if their dark secrets come to light. They thought their secrets would bond them together, but just the opposite is true. Anyone of the flawless citizens in little town of Rosewood is a suspect, it is made very difficult for one to decipher who A is and who killed Allison, and if in fact they are the same person or not!

It is a captivating show and can get very creepy form time to time; it is very impressive that in the gossip girl generation a show can have so many twists and scandals, it has truly surpassed many of the other dramas of its time, aimed at the same audience, including gossip girl and 90210! And it definitely isn’t short on eye candy with Niptuck’s Bryce Johnson, the sultry school teacher Ian Harding, and the slightly psychotic but never the less aesthetically pleasing Brant Daugherty.

This popular new show stars numerous young and extremely talented and beautiful actors and actresses including Ashley Benson (Bring it on) , Troian Bellisario, Lucy Hale, Shay Mitchell, all familiar faces from shows such as The OC, CSI, Private Practice, and Supernatural, and it is based on the set of Pretty Little Liar books, written  by Sara Shepard.

It isn’t only this hot new shows storylines that are intense and un-missable but it also has a great soundtrack. The theme song for Pretty Little Liars is “Secret” by The Pierces, which was suggested by one of the show’s stars, Ashley Benson. The pilot episode made use of music from artists such as 3OH!3, The Fray, Ben’s Brother, MoZella, and Colbie Caillat.

As it stands, the show is extremely underrated right now as it is truly phenomenal, it has been a massive success in America but is restricted to only sky channels here in Ireland, and will hopefully be picked up on some Irish channels before the year is out.

It is not yet revealed if there will be a second season, but I have no doubt that it will! It won a Teen Choice Award for best TV show and Ian Harding and Lucy Hale won Teen Choice Awards for best male and female TV show stars respectively. It was also nominated for outstanding drama series in the GLAAD Media Awards and for Favourite TV obsession at the People’s Choice Awards, so it is definitely worth watching! So if you feel you have given up too many habits for the new year, definitely tune into what is in my opinion the most addictive show on the box right now!
