Introducing… Toby Kaar

Who? Toby Kaar is an electronic musician from Cork.

The Story So Far… Paraphrasing his own biography, his name is Toby and he likes to make “choons.” Tipped by a number of writers (including yours truly) to make a splash this year, Kaar made waves at the recent ‘Next Big Thing’ festival in Whelan’s.

His Facebook, MySpace, etc. are pretty bare, with only the slightest information offered. Putting it simply, Kaar is very comfortable letting his music do the talking.

Sounds Like… Caribou. Very much so. In fact, I was lucky enough to catch Kaar as part of the FMC Tour last year and the whole performance was very like Caribou. The electronic grooves are similar, as is the light show and Kaar’s own stage presence.

Fans of Burial, Four Tet, Gold Panda, Pantha du Prince, Mount Kimbie, LCD Soundsystem, Flying Lotus and James Blake should all find quite a lot to enjoy here. Ambient, electronic, sometimes pretty hectic: Kaar is as good as they come in terms of electronica.

Essential Tracks: ‘Wensleydale’, ‘Bread’, ‘Dolly’, ‘Mexico’

What’s Next? It isn’t clear yet. Kaar remains unsigned and is doing a very good job on his own. He is looking to follow the waves he made in Whelan’s a few weeks ago by impressing some industry heads looking to send music to South X South-West in Austin.

If Kaar makes it that far, he could keep going from there. Keep your ear to the ground to see if Toby will be showing up anywhere in Cork soon – do not miss him if you have the chance to see him.

More Information on MySpace, and search for Toby on Facebook and Twitter too.
